Our German Partners

The Wilhelm-Kaisen-Oberschule was named after Wilhelm Kaisen, the widely respected, down-to-earth first mayor of the state of Bremen after WWII. Our classes go from 5 to 10. There are 688 pupils aged 10 - 16 of all abilities at our school. Pupils with good or very good marks in Year 10 can continue their school career in the sixth form at another school. Others go on to vocational schools.

Since many pupils at WKS have a migrant background the school offers special language integration classes. We also have one to two inclusive classes with five pupils each with special needs in the years 5 to 8 of "Oberschule", a kind of comprehensive school system.

The WKS has been a member of the associated schools project (asp) since 1991. We have contact to schools and organisations all over the world that we do joint projects on cultural and environmental issues with. Pupils and teachers of the WKS take part in national and international seminars in Germany and abroad on topics such as children's rights, peace, sustainability.

For a peaceful cooperation between our pupils we have special projects, such as the supervision of conflicts by specially trained pupils. Social workers look after schoolchildren who lack support at home, and offer studying help and spare time activities in the breaks and after lessons until 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday. Being a "Fit for Fun" school ensures that the pupils learn to lead a healthy life.

Some pupils at the WKS come from underprivileged homes which is relative to the society they live in, of course. They would not have the chance to travel to other European countries or meet representatives from these countries under normal circumstances. By joint projects done in the classroom using ICT and real-life encounters with representatives from other member states of the EU they will learn about the relativity of the terms rich and poor. They will be encouraged to put more emphasis on learning by the example of highly motivated schoolchildren from less well-off countries. Being able to communicate with other children will be an incentive for putting an effort into foreign language learning, especially English. Exchanging information and ideas about works of art will stimulate their creativity. Having to present their hometown with its architectural and religious characteristics by creating a model village will sharpen their awareness of the cultural variety in their surrounding.
