Knighton House School, Dorset, England, UK

Dorset:

Over half of Dorset is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and three-quarters of its coastline is a World Heritage Site. It is known as the Jurassic coast and is a great place to find Jurassic age fossils. Some famous land features on the coastline are Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door.

Agriculture was traditionally the major industry of Dorset but is now in decline and tourism has become increasingly important to the economy.

Dorset is the only county in England with no motorways, but it does have a network of A roads. There are two railway lines which connect directly with London. Dorset has ports at Poole, Weymouth and Portland and an international airport at Bournemouth.

The county has a variety of museums, theatres and festivals, and is host to one of Europe's largest outdoor shows, The Great Dorset Steam Fair, at the end of August each year. It is the birthplace of the British novelist Thomas Hardy, who used the county as the principal setting of his novels, such as 'Far From The Madding Crowds' and 'Tess of the D'Urbevilles',

Knighton House is a day and boarding preparatory school for girls aged from seven to thirteen and a pre-preparatory school for boys and girls between three and seven. We are situated just outside Blandford Forum and are surrounded by 30 acres of beautiful countryside, in the southwest of England, in the country of Dorset. Our school encourages all children to develop a love of learning, the skills and confidence for independent thought and a real sense of wonder at the world.

Our pupils come mainly from the local area, although some are from London or further afield. A few pupils have their family base in Europe or even further away. We also have foreign visiting students, mostly from France and Spain.

We are an animal focussed school. We have plenty of dogs in several of our classrooms, guinea pigs and ponies for riding at school, and even some fish. Surrounding our school are fields, in which there are often sheep or cows.

Music is a big part of school life. We have a junior choir, and a Chapel Choir. The Chapel Choir performs in public and is often sought out to sing at events such as weddings.

We are very happy to be a part of this Comenius project.
